"Gateway laptop owner experience is not good" 2010-02-14

This model, on paper, seemed to have everything I wanted; 17.3" screen, Wireless N and the latest from Inte, the I5 processor. I bought a Netgear router to install the Wireless N up to 300 Mbps. When I tried the Gateway N7920, - in flaming red - it could not recognize the G network, only the 2,4 GHz (up to 150 Mbps). I went back for Netgear support - which was fabulous. We tried for one and half hours to see if there is a router problem. It wasn't. Then I called Gateway support via chat. All they did was to register the laptop, have some small talk, and directed me to call the Gateway pay-per-minute support line. I said my computer was one day old, why should I pay for support? They were adamant. I must pay, because this is wireless issue not covered by warranty. I accepted grudgingly to pay for a 30 minute conversation with the technician. He tried some banal operations and decided he has no idea why this is happening. He wasn't even sure whether NV7920 had Wireless N and took 10 minutes from the paid-by-me minutes to find out... "It should be the network", he said. He never heard that Gateway had any problems with Wireless N, he said - implying that it is my immagination. I was left speechless by the attitude, the lack of care teh the supercial know-how displayed. His only interest was to collect the per minute fees.

I tried then my daughter laptop, who was visiting - and her HP Turion II identified immediately the wireless N 350 Mbps it worked smoothly. We were sitting side by side. My flaming red Gateway, was still blind...

My sheer luck was that I bought my laptop from Amazon. They responded my email immediately and offered me a few options. One of them was replacement, the other one was to return the computer. I returned the computer. No matter how great a computer looks, buying their brand name means dealing with the manufacturer long term. After the Gateway customer experience, they lost a customer and provided ammunition to the the competition. I am still considering what laptop to buy. I can assure you, it will not be a Gateway.

"so far so good" 2010-02-10

I'm using my netbook right now and it hasn't given me any troubles thus far. It's been excellent for my classes and is light enough to carry around. The battery works great too. It's exactly how its described. only trouble is the windows 7 starter. its a total bummer and I'm planning on upgrading to the home edition asap. 2 thumbs up for Gateway!

I just received my LT2108 netbook and was impressed with it from the very moment I opened the box. Sleek, light, fast, efficient and sexy to boot! Excellent tactile keyboard, amazingly crip and bright screen, good touchpad, fantastic battery life - small footprint! Good transfer speeds and responsive. Handles multi-media and video without breaking a sweat. I find myself using this netbook more-so than my regular laptop - it does everything and is more than capable. I shopped around a variety of netbooks but this one tops them all. Gateway has really hit one out of the park with this LT. I recommend it highly without hesitation.

"By Far, The Worse Laptop Ever,,," 2010-02-07

This is by far the worse Gateway Laptop i have ever purchased, i would not recommend it at all. First style is not stylish in any aspect, the materials that it was made of it's very poor and simple. Second, the gestures added to the mouse pad, wtf? this is very difficult to get used to, i thought i could but still not working for me. i tried to disable them but they will still do the gestures sometimes. Third, if you get errors or any malfunctions with this item, it will be very difficult for you to get an answer from amazon or form the "manufacturer" (Gateway) Amazon will tell you to contact the manufacturer the manufacturer will only make you do a full system factory restore, what is that going to do? erase all your data and start from "0" . You will still have the same problem, believe me. I'm saying this by experience, this so called "new laptop" will give you problems.
Other bad things about this laptop is the speakers, the way your opened windows work or display are just stupid, there is too much clicking to just closed an opened window or even go to one.

At last, the ony 2 good this about it it's the battery life and display resolution, the end.

I purchased this product in August of 2009. Until this December it worked beautifully. Soon after, the screen started to wig out and we eventually had to send it in to Gateway. Needless to say, I have had to send it in 3 times now because every time it comes back, it is not fixed. It wont even turn on anymore. Do not buy this computer!!

This was loaded with that I need in a lightweight package and for a great price at about $550.00. The battery life is respectable, the display is very clean and has excellent resolution with HDMI. This is my third gateway in the last 10 years, and I still can find no reason to move over to a Dell or HP.

I don't have this model, I have model MD2614u. I'm rating the Gateway costumer service here. I bought MD2614u laptop about a year ago. The computer didn't charge the battery two months later from the purchase. I called them, they send me a replacement battery. About a month latter same problem came up. I called, they sent me another replacement. Couple weeks latter the battery went bad again, I sent the computer to the Gateway service. I had it back two weeks latter but the battery had a same issue little bit later. I called, sent it to them again. I got it back in about two weeks, but same day I had to call again -guess what was the problem- So they made me to send it to their service again. I did. That was two months ago, I'm sitting front of my laptop, it works good, I just can't use it without the power adapter. I called them today, they want to me to send it to their service again...I'm not up to it

"GREAT VALUE, for an i5 processor" 2010-02-10

So far so good, the computer is what I would expect from a 4 gb ram, 1066 front side bus and a i5 processor. for 599.00 you can get the nv7919u which is the same except it has an i3 processor. don't be cheap spend the extra 80.00 for the i5. You'll be happy you did.
If your going to be traveling alot is lab top is not for you. The battery life doesn't seem to be much over 2hrs. But last night i did find a power management function within windows 7. I hope this helps the battery life.
the 17.3 screen is awesome!!! The quick touch buttons at the top are nice. I would say that in the item description it leads you to believe that it is blue ray compatible. Its NOT!. Also, the HDMI doesn't seem to have sound, I can't believe that so it must be a setting in the computer or in my tv.

"Great laptop replacing a fellow Gateway laptop" 2010-01-28

This laptop was purchased to replace a 5-year-old Gateway M350WVN. I had a little problem with the delivery person for UPS, which was a substitute, dropping off the laptop at a neighbor's house. However, nothing is wrong with this great Gateway. With the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system, 4gb of ram, and an excellent dual-core processor, this laptop has enough power for me, a college student. This is a great value for money, helped further by Amazon Prime's free two-day shipping, which actually got the laptop here in one day. 5 stars for a great laptop and delivery time by Amazon. "System is Amazing, DREADFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE" 2010-01-23

I was delighted to purchase an affordable netbook from a reputable company that came equipped with decent software. I've owned this netbook for a short time and all was perfect until one day it failed to start up. I contacted Gateway to address the problem in hopes of guidance for a simple reboot. I was unable to get an actual person on the phone and the automated messages encouraged correspondence via email. Seeing that the netbook was unusable, contact was difficult. I managed to report the problem but have been jerked around for the past 2 weeks with suggestions that have either failed or do not pertain to the issue. I've had to repeat my situation with each response and still have nothing to show for it. They have been extremely hesitant in fulfilling my request to send my netbook in for analysis or exchanging for a new one. The netbook is still under warranty but has proven useless. This whole ordeal has been absolutely frustrating and I sincerely regret ever purchasing a product from Gateway.

Please note that the product itself was wonderful when in working condition and the problem with my particular netbook does not represent all Gateway products. However, please take into consideration that if you do find a problem or defect with your product that a resolution (if at all) will take a long time.

Works great! Nice Speed! The clarity is great on the built in webcam and it has little to no delay, most webcams you can move then 30 seconds later it shows you move, well not with this one. It also linked right to my wireless network and I walked all through the house and outside, while talking on the internet and never lost or had a poor coonection.
So, to some it up.... I love it and will get more for the rest of my family. I have two and will be getting two more!

I really love this netbook! I have a great HP laptop that I absolutely adore as well, but it weighs quite a bit more and was a pain for me to carry around every day. I commute by train, and I like to have a computer. I also run a blog, so while on the train I am often using my laptop. This netbook is so light and ultra portable I take it with me everywhere now. I'm more into performance than looks, but this laptop does look very nice, the red really makes it stand out. For those curious about the ability of the computer, I did in fact install Photoshop CS3 on here, for minor photo work related to my blog. I certainly wouldn't try to do any hardcore photoshopping on here, but it will certainly run the program quite well for my needs.

I really like this netbook for the following reasons:
1. I like the red color, sets it apart from other netbooks
2. It runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 without a hitch, webcam, mic, wireless and all, kudos to the Ubuntu community
3. It is perfect for bringing it to class and taking notes, and even recording the professor. Battery life with wifi off and screen brightness turned down was about 3:30, which isn't bad for such a small netbook with a small battery

Things to consider though:
It is small! Try any 10.1 netbook at a retail store before buying. The size of the screen is a bit of an adjustment, but of course there are several advantages to a smaller screen.

Don't expect to do any gaming short of flash games and solitaire. Of course, if you are looking at netbooks, you should already know this.

anywho, for the price and the style, I have no regrets about this netbook! Buy it! They all have the same relative specs anyways, so I let my vanity get the best of me to get the red one.

My previous Gateway Vista powered laptop suffered a violent death when the phone line was struck by lightning, taking out the phone, modem, and computer. Since it took nearly a week to repair the phone line, I took a couple of days to research what I wanted in a computer. I considered making the switch to Mac, but I'm a text oriented person, so all the fabulous artistic features would be wasted. I briefly considered a desktop, but I like portability. I checked out the laptop features, spoke to a really cute fireman buying this same model, and decided to go for the netbook.

For the price of a new full featured laptop, I now have an adorable and easily portable computer running Windows XP service pack 3 (yeah!), an 18" monitor to use the extended desktop feature, a wireless modem which frees me to work anywhere in my home, including my front porch and my husband's man cave, and a multi-port usb device CyberPower High-Speed 7-Port USB Hub to plug in my ergonomic keyboard and other items.

Things I wish I had done:
1. When the geek squad performed the autopsy on my previous computer and harvested the documents and photos, I should have gone with the external hard drive instead of the DVDs. Will Scarlet does not have a DVD drive, so I had to transfer things to a thumb drive and it was not efficient. Plus, now I have essentially useless DVD archives.
2. Purchased a DVD RW external drive: Would fix problem #2 plus other download issues I have. This is an easy fix, but it would not be necessary if I had thought a little further ahead.

Why Will Scarlet works for me: I'm a writer, minor photo editing only--no photoshop or video, my internet surfing is pretty tame, and my game choices run to the puzzle variety. MS Office and Quicken are about as fancy as I get.

I am pretty satisfied with this Gateway laptop. It has Windows 7 which makes connectivity with other devices, networks, etc a breeze. While I am no fan of Norton AV or Internet Security, it comes with a 60 day trial package, and I was surprised that I actually now like the utilities. Keypad feels firm. Speakers not much but headphones deliver great sound. Max resolution is 1600 x 900, so using HDMI cable to connect to a 1980 x 1020 screen ain't gonna happen. I found that I could either set screen to lower resolution to accept my HDMI connection or I could adjust laptop resolution to a lower resolution that was comparable to my LG flatscreen. With limited resolution set aside, it still has a great picture on it's 17.3 inch screen. It feels very durable, but my only problem with it is it's keypad. While it is allegedly "touch sensitive" with varying options upon touch, it remains too touchy. I have accidentally closed or opened programs which could cause dramatic results while working on important files. Yet, it is overall a very nice laptop.

"Pleasantly Suprised!" 2010-01-05

I just purchased one of these at BB for $599.0 and I must say I am pleasantly suprised. Many of the reviews I read online (the majority here at Amazon or at the BB site) were spot on. I agonized for several days between this laptop and the Sony VAIO VGN-FW510/F, which you can find here on amazon for ~ 780. This included several trips to the BB brick and mortar to look at both machines. In the end, my budget limitations won out - I didn't want to spend the extra 200. I thought for sure I would have some regrets (never buy cheap, someone once told me), but none in this case. I can't stop looking at the damn thing thinking that I got a good deal.

Some initial thoughts:

Screen size and quality - the screen is of very good quality, much better than my existing HP DV2748se laptop; it is bright and clear whereas my HP always looks washed out. It's not an IPS panel, so the usual caveats about viewing angles apply. The screen is also of the right resolution - 1600 x 900 on 17.3 diagonal inches. Text / fonts are of good size (not tiny as you get with some high resolution laptop screens, e.g., 1920 x 1200 on a 15.6" screen)- it looks like my desktop at work - just not as much screen real estate.

Build quality - acceptable; it's not as nice as a Macbook, but it definitely feels solid. The screen however, does flex a bit but no more so than my other HP laptop. The screen hinge is hefty and solid; on my HP the screen wiggles back and forth a few degrees (i.e., it feels loose) - not so with this machine.

Speakers - i read some of the reviews that stated the speakers sucked...they aren't that bad: very little bass and such but more than adequate for watching TV or casually listening to music. I don't have a TV, so I'm on either on Hulu or streaming some radio station or [...].

Keyboard - one of the few livable minuses. The keys are flush with very little separation between them, so it is easy to hit the wrong key and feeling around with your fingers for a key is difficult. It takes some getting used to. I don't think the extended keyboard is very useful.

Wireless - no issues, works as advertised, I was up and running in minutes and reception very good. No blue tooth however, but that is not a minus for me.

Windows 7 - a pleasant surprise! It is slick, smooth, and is what Vista should have been. BTW, I also run Linux; when I went to the store I took in an Ubuntu 9.10 boot CD and loaded it up (much to the consternation of the salesman). It seemed to find all the hardware, to include the wireless card.

Operating Temperature - this laptop runs quiet and cool. My HP has this annoying feature of the cooling fan cycling on and off in a rapid fashion, i.e., it will ramp up to max rpms and the quickly turn back off, not to mention it get's very hot in my lap. Not so with this machine...i can hardly hear the fan when it is on, which doesn't seem to be very often. I assume this is partly due to the larger case size which yields a better airflow through the internal components.

Gateway Tech support - many reviewers commented on this (or the lack thereof). It appears to be poor - I went to the gateway web site and perused the support section of the site. I was unable to locate a number if you want to call a real person; they do offer tech support for exorbitant fees on a per minute basis; so between the reviews I have read and what I found on the site leads me to believe if this puppy breaks I will be in trouble.

Memory Limitation - this machine maxes out at 4GB :-( This was one of the selling points for the Sony, which can go up to 8GB. So this might be an issue with future proofing your purchase.

No eSata or firewire port :-( However, it does have HDMI and 4 x USB.

Overall, I am very pleased thus far with my purchase and definitely feel like I got a good deal, especially for $599.00

++++ UPDATE ++++
This is an update as of 2/05/2010. I've had the machine for over a month now and I am still more than satisfied. Just a few more comments based on my experience:

Battery life appears good. I usually average about three hours - not bad for a six cell battery - and this usually includes playing some video or listening to music.

HDMI works extremely well. In some cases on a laptop, the HDMI port is not true HDMI, i.e., you only get video and are still left to run a separate audio output to your television. I'm happy to report this is not the case; I had the opportunity to hook up the laptop to a friends Samsung 48" HD television and it works as advertised; you only need a single HDMI cable to carry both audio and video. The picture looked excellent and was at the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Recovery Disks. None are included...you have to burn your own onto 3 x DVDs using the software already installed on your machine.

The touchpad. The single bar along the bottom is a bit hard to press. Like a Mac touchpad, you depress either the left or right extreme of the bar. With my earlier laptop, which had the normal two-button layout, the buttons were relatively easy to press so that is what I used all the time. I had forgotten (and had to relearn) that instead of pressing the left button you can simply double tap the touchpad :-) So this is what I used now and it works quite nicely. You can also set up numerous other touchpad "gestures" ala what is used on the iPhone so you don't wind up using the touchpad bar. For example, I've configure it to mimic the right mouse button if you tap the upper right corner of the touchpad (all four corners are configurable). It doesn't compensate 100% for having the bar a bit hard on the fingers, but it is more than workable.

Great laptop for the money. My only complaint is the flush keyboard. Still trying to get used to it. Have been using my desktop keyboard with backlit keys. Wish Gateway could have done that. Love the bright screen and the massive 17.3 size. Great for these eyes of mine. I'm typing on the Gateway keyboard but I have to have good lighting so my fingers don't get in the wrong position. Damn!!! Lots of great features. Bought an HDM connection for my TV and watched "Twilight Zone" from Media Center. Very sharp image on my Sony Bravia 32" screen. Oh, another complaint...the volume is not very high on this laptop. Any suggestions on how to increase volume would be greatly appreciated. I've tried adjusting the settings but it's still not as loud as I'd like.

I'm on my 4th day of my 14 day limit from BB. Don't want to pay the restocking fee. Almost bought the Toshiba that was also $599 with same specs but it didn't have the gesture feature which I love. I'm still loving this little unit. By reducing resolution and brightness I can get over 4 hrs of battery life.

Update: Have now had this wonderful laptop for 14 days. Actually went back to BB to see about upgrading to another laptop with an easier to use keyboard. Looked at the HP and Toshiba but they were $150 - $200 more for same specs. Wondered over to the Mac area and asked about the Mac Keyboard. The rep said it's compatible so spent $50 and now have a terrific, lightweight Mac Keyboard that connects via USB. I place it right over the Gateway keyboard and it doesn't uptruct or affect the Gateway keyboard at all. Love this Mac keyboard, very lightweight and easy to type on. Hope this laptop lasts a awhile. So far am very happy.
Try the Mac keyboard if you really can't get used to the flush keyboard on the Gateway.

Bought this laptop as a larger screen product for my home network and I am very pleased. Better than the Sony we have and egual to a Toshiba I use at work. You get a ton of features for your $$$. Only thing I would ask for is a better paper manual which explains all of the features. Overall I am very happy weth this product.

I bought Gateway because I have in the past. I currently just but a new hard drive by gateway and love it. The notebook is perfect for me. The 11.6 screen is the perfect size for my small office area and for traveling. I do not need a cd because I have a burner at home. It took me a while to regiser my programs, but it was easy enough without the cd capability, all the registrations #s are on you purchased programs. I am still learning to type on it. It has flat buttons and it is a little strange. I am getting use to it though. I would recommend this to anyone. I bought a skin to go over it to prevent scratching and it is really cool. Runs at a good speed. I am going to purchase the extra 2 gb. I take a lot of pictures when away. I haven't used it long enough to rate the battery life. Will have to get back to you on that subject.

I purchased this laptop at the beginning of September 2009. I LOVED it at first. The size is perfect and the cute red color is an added bonus. I did not have any troubles at all.

In December I started having problems. When opening the laptop when it is in sleep mode half of the time it will not 'wake' up and I have to power down. Also, while using the computer the screen just goes black and the machine shuts down.

I understand it is a small computer and did not cost that much, however having these kinds of problems after less than 6 months from purchasing is NOT acceptable.

Everything so far as advertised. Great to use. Compact, long lasting battery, seems to have good power saving features, more than adequate speed and memory to handle excel spreadsheets. Lives up to all I've read and seen about this machine. Very lightweight.

I am a dedicated Mac User -- have been since 1984 (Owned the first Mac 128). I have 3 Macs in my house. I wanted a small netbook to take to work. Mac doesn't have one. I also didn't want to spend a lot. So when I saw this on Amazon and read the reviews, I thought it was a fairly cheap way to try a new PC with Win 7. I find it to be VERY nice. It plays well with all my accessories (drives, printers, etc -- everything but my AppleTV -- which I didn't expect would work). It is fast, the keyboard is full size and easy to use -- sound is very good -- the trackpad works as it should -- the screen is really nice -- much better than the 10" netbooks I see others using at work. I am really pleased with this computer! I must say, to be "fair and balanced", the Win software is not as nice as MAC OSX. I find it to be a lot more intrusive, and I get a lot of "messages" telling me I should update and sign on for a new program somewhere. I have been ignoring them for the most part. I am also more concerned about viruses, and malware, etc, which I don't find to be a problem with my Macs (Yes -- I have virus protection on my Macs -- but have never "caught" any). So I guess that is my only negative -- just an uneasiness about having to deal with Microsoft and the virus problem. It is easy to use, though. I thought it would take me longer to learn my way around.
One last thing -- my wife LOVES the color -- says it matches the kitchen decor (it does). Now I bet I am going to have to get her one too -- Nah -- she won't give up her MacBook. Good thing -- this little baby is now 50 bucks more now. Glad I bought when I did!
If you are seriously looking for a good notebook -- get this -- REALLY!
